Cat Injury Recovery Story: Spirit’s Incredible Journey to Healing

Every recovery has a story, and Spirit’s is one we’ll never forget. This cat injury recovery story began when Spirit arrived at Janesville Veterinary Clinic with severe injuries and needed immediate medical care. Thanks to dedicated veterinary treatment and a lot of determination, Spirit’s journey became an inspiring example of resilience and healing.

The Trauma

When Spirit’s owner arrived, she was understandably shaken. She told us that Spirit had injured his leg and could no longer walk. We immediately brought him into our treatment area to assess what we assumed would be a limb injury.

What we discovered was far more serious.

Spirit, an indoor/outdoor cat, had unfortunately crossed paths with a weed-eater. Along with several deep lacerations on his right hind leg, Spirit had suffered a large abdominal wound roughly the size of a softball. The severity of his injuries meant the situation was urgent, and our entire team shifted into action mode.

The Treatment

Dr. Mike quickly took the lead, and with the support of our surgical and treatment teams, Spirit was rushed into surgery. His abdominal wound was carefully cleaned and closed, while the team worked meticulously to repair as many of the lacerations in his leg as possible. It was a delicate and complex procedure, but Spirit handled it like a champ.Healing, however, rarely happens overnight.

The weeks that followed required dedication—from both Spirit and our team. For the next month, he visited us two to four times each week for bandage changes and wound care. Anyone who has cared for a healing wound knows it’s rarely a straight path. There were ups and downs, adjustments to bandaging, and lots of monitoring to ensure everything was progressing the way it should.

With each visit, we began to see encouraging signs. The abdominal wound steadily improved, his leg grew stronger, and Spirit’s personality started shining through more and more with every appointment.

The Triumph

Eventually, Spirit returned for his final recheck with Dr. Mike. The moment everyone had been hoping for had arrived—Spirit was officially cleared.

Soon he was bandage-free and walking on his own again. Watching him move independently after everything he had endured was something our entire team will never forget!

Cases like Spirit’s remind us why we do what we do. Veterinary medicine isn’t just about procedures and medications—it’s about teamwork, compassion, and giving animals a chance to heal, even when the odds feel overwhelming.

We are incredibly proud of the staff members who played a role in Spirit’s recovery, and deeply grateful that Spirit’s family trusted us during such a frightening time.

Spirit’s journey wasn’t easy, but today he’s back on his feet—and that’s a Happy Tail worth celebrating!

From the Pet Owner:

“As soon as I found my cat in his condition, I panicked and called my vet. They said they were triple booked ($) and I could call around or drive to Madison in my old car that barely makes it to Woodman’s. This is after I paid them for 10 years.

I really feel the angels took over as I was so distraught. I suddenly remembered the little house of flowers, 6 blocks away on Milwaukee street that had a sign saying ‘Janesville Veterinary Clinic’. When I got there with Spirit, I barged through the door crying, please. please, help me, my cat is dying. From the back room came Doctor Michael Hotchkiss, who seemed 7 feet tall, and with a worried face he took Spirit.

All the vet techs, about 5 of them, went with him to the back room to examine Spirit. They never asked if I had money or said they did not have time, they just focused on the cat and stabilized him. Gave him pain medication. Doctor Mike came out after a while and said this is very serious, he had removed maggots from Spirit’s belly and stitched it up and said there were wounds on the leg and it might have to be amputated.

When Spirit came out, leg heavily bandaged, belly oozing because Dr Mike wanted it to be open a little, he said: every day we will put on new wet bandages. The vet techs were kissing little Spirit and volunteering to wet wrap the bandages every day ON THEIR LUNCH HOURS.

No one asked me for money, and when we finally talked about it, Dr Mike’s priority was the cat. I learned to love those vet techs who fussed over Spirit and called him their good boy.

I learned there were rescued kittens in the back.

I learned every Wednesday they stopped booking clients for two hours while the entire staff had seminars at the clinic to improve their skills. Their skills are very advanced.

All the techs taught me something. All of them have animals, horses, dogs, cats and children–delightful, animal-loving articulate children.

We fought off infections to Spirit’s belly and the vet techs watched that carefully , sending pictures from the east side clinic to the west side clinic, depending where the doctors were. Then, after several weeks, they changed from wet bandages to dry bandages and they said we were certain the flesh was growing back healthy. Remember, staff were giving up their lunch hours every day to do this. Spirit was still heavily medicated.

One day the bandages were removed for good. Dr Mike said there might be a slight limp but Spirit’s belly was clear of any infection and Spirit was putting weight on the leg. We kept Spirit on pain meds for several weeks more until he got used to walking but he was saved. Today he walks without a limp.

The skill, the kindness, the compassion are rare. Miracles do happen. I found the East side Janesville Vet Clinic, and I will stay with forever. They will care for your animal with skill and kindness.”
