Comprehensive Wellness Exams and Preventative Medicine
We believe preventative medicine and welnn care is the most important factor in mainiting your pets health. The most important aspect of wellness care is a regular physical exam and consultation. Many diseases start out with subtle signs and slight changes in a patients historyor physical makeup. Noticing these subtle factors can allow our doctors to diagnose problems early to improve outcome. In addition to frequent physical exams we recommend vaccination as a means to minimize disease in our furry friends. Based on current research we have decreased the frequency of several vaccines and have implented a three year rotation schedule of vaccination to both prevent disease but minimize potential side effects from those vaccines. In addition we ask a series of questions regarding his/her lifestyle so taht we can tailor the vaccination schedule to each individual patient. As patients get into their "senior years" (greater than 8 in dogs and 10 in cats) we recommend doing senior screens to look for problems that may not appear on a routine physical exam. These include blood tests, urine tests, blood pressure measurement and radiographs (x-rays).
Full Diagnostic Capabilities for Sick Patients
In addition to wellness care we are well suited for managing sick patients. We have a full battery of in house diagnostics that can be used. We have a complete array of blood machines that can run serum chemistries, complete blood counts, and electrolytes. We also have new digital radiology (x-ray) that allows us to get super fine images in as little as 7 seconds. This minimizes patient restraint, enables the doctors to obtain an accurate diagnosis and reduces your wait time. There are times when radiographs don't give us a complete picture and in those we use an ultrasound machine to give us a better view a patients insides. We also have EKG and blood pressure machines to evaluate cardiac function. We utilize telemedicine to send most of these tests directly to specialists such as cardiologists or radiologists to ensure your pet receives the best treatment. Each clinic also has a Tonopen that measures eye pressure and allows for rapid detection of glaucoma. When are in house tests are not enough we can send samples to Marshfield Laboratories for additional testing.
In some cases we may refer patients whose condition is deteriorating, a diagnosis is proving difficult to pin down or if a patient needs specialized care such as chemotherapy. There are several specialists in the Madison area that we work with and may use to help provide care for your pets.
We perform a wide range of surgeries from preventative routine procedures to complex soft tissue and orthopedic surgeries. Safety and patient comfort are the two most important aspects when surgery is done. We take many steps to help ensure an animal recovers from an anesthetic event with minimal complications. In addition to using the safest anesthetic protocols available, every patient undergoing anesthesia receives and IV catheter to allow for rapid drug and fluid administration, has a staff member dedicated to monitoring vital functions until they are completely recoverd and has monitors attached to track cardiac and respiratory functions throughout the procedure.
In addition to patient safety we strive to provide the highest level of patient comfort possible. We employ a multimodal approach to pain management. We give each patient several different types of pain medications before and after surgery. In addition to the medications used we have a surgical laser that takes the place of the scalpel blade during surgery and helps to minimize both pain and bleeding during surgery.
We believe that dental care is one of the key elements to maintaining a long healthy life. Dental comes in a variety of ways depeding on the individual patient and severity of disease. It is our goal to start dental care early in a patient's life to prevent gingivitis and ultimately the loss of teeth. The best method for caring for your pet's teeth is through regular brushing. We can provide both an enzymatic toothpaste (flavored in beef or chicken) as well as special toothbrushes designed for each size animal. Some patients are not as cooperative with brushing and for those we reommend a prescription diet by Hills call T/D. This food can be mixed with the regular diet, used as treats or given as a complete balanced diet. It is specifically designed to help scrub the teeth and inhibit tartar production.
At some point most pets will develop enough tartar that a dental prophy (cleaning) need to be done. This procedure is the exact same thing done when people go to their dentist for a cleaning. The only difference is we can't get our patients to say "Ahh" so we do the procedure with them under anesthesia. This helps to reduce stress and discomfort for the patient. A thorough dental cleaning is the best way to both prevent and treat dental disease.
We realize that injuries and illness don't always come when it is convenient. For that reason we have a doctor on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. If an acute incident occurs during regular business hours we can see patients immediately upon arrival. Please call ahead so the staff can be prepared to deliver the care necessary as quickly as possible. For after hours care please call the regular clinic number. You will be transferred to one of our experienced staff members who will get some basic information from you and help to decide if emergency care is necessary. If a doctor is needed the staff member will contact the veterinarian on call and arrange a time to examine your pet.
In order to provide the highest level of client convenience we have a well stocked pharmacy in each clinic to provide necessary medications. We realize that getting the medications is only half the battle. The other half is getting those medications into your furry friend. To help take the hassle of administering medications we use the FlavorX system to compound medications into flavored suspensions. Most of the medications we stock can be made into a more palatable liquid to ease delivery. Just let the staff know if you are interested in having your pet's medications flavored. IN addition to our own pharmacy we have partnered with Vetcentric to provide an expanded array of medications as well as offering medications (including Heartgard and Frontline) mailed directly to your home. Vetcentric is one of the only internet based pharmacies that has the full support of the pharmaceutical companies. For more information on Vetcentric you can click the "Prescription Refills" link at the top of the page or ask one of the staff members at your next visit.
